I’m not exactly sure what the technical name is for these sites, but I liked to call them parked sites. Why? because they’re of absolutely no use to anyone and simply take up space. Personally, I think that the people who own these domains are pathetic. The Internet is an amazing tool and resource for the entire world, but things like Spam, Viruses, and Parked Domains just make it a pain in the ass some times. The parked domain in question and pictured here is bingshui.com. See, as you may have noticed my domain is currently bingshui.org. It would be a dot com, but unfortunately some dude with massive self esteem issues has put a picture of a highschool girl and some links on said domain.
I absolutely hate it and I think the parked domains are officially my least favorite pathetic excuse for a human being on the Internet. Spam? Okay, I can filter that. Annoying, but not the end of the world and a good incentive for being a little more careful with who I give my email address out to. Viruses? Okay, viruses suck ass, but again, fairly easy to avoid it you want. Now the parked domains? These fucking suck. Excuse my language, but they do. You’ve got some pathetic peice of shit out there in the world buying up all the domains they can and just putting bullshit links on them. You know what those links are? Don’t click on them because they’re paid ads. See Google and similar sites have things like AdWords where you can put links on your site and if anyone clicks them you get paid a penny or ten cents or some shit like that. So what do these ass holes do? They buy as many random domains as they can and then get paid for people accidentally landing on them and then clicking a link. Now you may be thinking, “well that sounds a little dumb. How much could they possible make by doing that?” Well if you look up the domain on a whois database this particular jerk off has 4,652,617 domains.
Here is where the story gets really fun. So I’m looking at bingshui.com…
RANT: In case you hadn’t figured this out yet, ‘bing shui’ means ‘ice water’ in Chinese. Why anyone in their right mind would want this domain for commercial purposes is totally beyond me. I like it because I lived in China for a year (during which time I never saw a glass of ice water) and because my last name (Zimney) in Polish means ‘cold’. So, I think it’s safe to say there aren’t many people going after this domain.
… and I see that there is a link at the bottom saying, “this domain may be for sale”. I click the link, it takes me to some service and basically sends an email to some “service rep” for purchasing this domain. Now this could very well be a ligitimate company, or it might just be the dude that owns the 4 million domains has set up a site to email himself when someone wants to buy the domain. I offer $10. Pretty standard. I get an email back that says,
“I regret that the offer you presented via our online form was not sufficient to meet the minimum reserve for the domain. I understand that at times, people enter a general number into the form as a placeholder or to see where the email will go. I wanted to personally reach out to you, to let you know that we did receive your email and while the offer was not sufficient to meet the reserve. If you would like information on the seller’s asking price for the domain, let me know.”
Okay, I can deal with that. So I send an email back saying, “hey, that’s cool. You want to make a little profit, I can dig it. What is the seller’s asking price?” The reply?
“The owner of this domain has listed the sales price for this domain at $2000 USD, but is willing to entertain a reasonable counter offer.”
$2000!? Fuck you, you greedly, pathetic little excuse for a human being. What the hell is that!? Some jack ass is making a living by buying up everyone domain known to man, meanwhile people, companies, whoever can’t get a decent domain because they’re all taken. Screw that. And $2000? This guy is basically just hoping that one out of every thousand of his domains that someone shows an interest in is some big company that needs the domain name and $2000 is bullshit, and ridiculous but they can afford it and so they will. Me? I find it insulting. Domains should be the cheapest thing on the Internet. It doesn’t cost anyone anything to have them. The only reason they need to be managed as they do is because otherwise fuck sticks like this guy would just grab every domain in existance.
Okay, enough for that rant. I do feel a little better now though… but only a little.
